Starting a Business: Important Factors That You Should Consider

Home » Business » Starting a Business: Important Factors That You Should Consider
7 July 2021

It is the dream of almost every individual to start their own business. However, only 44% of startups survive for more than 10 years. In fact, a post by Investopedia stated that over 50% of small business startups don’t survive to the fifth year. The main reason for business closure is because most entrepreneurs don’t consider some factors before they start their businesses. Most people are fueled by the desire to start their businesses just because others are doing it. They don’t have any idea about the finances and hard work required for a company to succeed.

What You Need to Know Before You Start Your Business

Don’t complicate your concept

Businesses often start from an idea or a solution to a problem. However, ensure that your idea isn’t too complicated. The more complex your plan gets, the more expensive it will be. Additionally, complicated solutions will be challenging to implement and market. After you identify your solution, determine how you can deliver high-quality services or products. Launching a simple product will help cut costs.

Target market

Having a product or service isn’t enough. You need customers in order for your startup to generate income. When starting your business and you already know the product or service you want to sell, you should first study the market for it. Identify your target customers. Keep in mind that a service or product for everyone is a service or product for nobody.

To identify your target market, answer the question, who do you want to sell your service or product to? Assess the demand for it and understand the rules and regulations of the product or service, especially if you’re going to sell it internationally.

Capital

The next important step is to estimate the start-up costs. This includes the costs of starting and operating your business. Your business will require funds that you may not have, which is why you should seek capital. You can get money from your friends and family, angel investors, or you may need to look for self employed loans through financial institutions.

When mapping out your finances, factor in things like fees and taxes, and the cost of technology your business will need. Unfortunately, most businesses don’t understand the importance of technology as a competitive advantage. Cloud solutions can create a real competitive edge over your competitors in your target market.

Location

Before you start your business, it is vital that you think about its location. Ideally, your retail store should be located in a densely populated area that can be easily accessed by your customers. On the other hand, if you’re starting a manufacturing business, choose an area that can help cut costs and save money on water, electricity, transportation, and taxes. Additionally, identify a location where you can quickly get human resources and raw materials for your business. You may also want to choose an area where you can get subsidies and rebates from the government.

Final Thoughts

While now is the right time to start your business, there are several reasons why businesses fail within the first year. For your startup to succeed, consider the above factors. They will help you eliminate common risks and challenges that you’ll face on your journey.
