Exploring Moral Values with Your Child

Home » Family and Parenting » Exploring Moral Values with Your Child
10 December 2021

Moral values are that special code of conduct that most of us try to live by. Moral values can of course vary from person to person; it’s a very personal thing and not everyone sets the same standards. However, at the most basic level, good moral standards include the following –

  • Not hurting others
  • Not lying
  • Not stealing
  • Helping those who are weaker than ourselves
  • Keeping our planet clean and healthy
  • Caring for animals

Even the smallest children can understand the above. When discussing morals with your children, try to use real-life situations as a catalyst. For example, let’s imagine your child has felt frustrated and has had a run-in with a sibling. Once things have calmed down, it’s a good idea to talk to your child about imagining how other people feel in certain situations.

Similarly, when out and about, notice and discuss litter on the streets or in the countryside. Ask your child questions such as –

  • How did it get there?
  • What harm might it do?
  • Is there anything we could do to help?

Your child might be thrilled to realise they can make a change by picking up the littler themselves.

If you can, why not organise a littler picking session. Many local environmental groups run these or you can just arrange your own. You will need bags for the rubbish, a litter picker, gloves and thick-soled shoes. Talk to your child about the sorts of rubbish they should not try to pick up such as glass, animal mess or medical waste.

Another great route to exploring moral values with your child is to look at Aesop’s Fables. These old but wonderful stories offer excellent moral lessons all wrapped up in a great tale!

Moral values and their development are an important part of your child’s education – at school, your child will enjoy plenty of opportunities to learn more about moral values through a variety of lessons and activities. This independent school in Abingdon for example have strong links to a variety of charities and actively help pupils to learn more about how they can make a difference to others.

This is a collaborative post.
