As well as our physical health, we should all be taking care of our mental health. That goes for children especially as they go through a number of changes which can be difficult to adjust to and bring on complex emotions. Also, at their age, it’s likely that they won’t know what it is that they’re feeling and how to deal with it which is why we’ve created a short guide with tips on how to support children with their mental health.

A Bit of Context
We all have mental health. It’s just that some are more prone to struggling with it than other and this is due to what is often referred to as a chemical imbalance. Some days it may be hard to deal with whilst not so much on much. It’s like a spectrum and it is possible to move to either end.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness refers to the ways in which we can regulate our emotions by concentrating on what’s around us. When we’re hit with a wave of anxiety or depressive thoughts, we’re overwhelmed by things that have happened in their the past or have the potential of happening in the future – things that cannot be changed. What mindfulness does is bring us back to the present moment so we can shift focus and stop thinking about the things that we cannot change. There are a whole range of techniques that you can explore with your child. Most involve breathing and looking at ways to improve it.
Speak to Each Other
It’s important that you speak to your child for obvious reasons but having that line of communication can help to make sure that they feel comfortable enough to come to you with their problems. If this is not the kind of relationship that you have already, start by asking your child about their day and go from there.
