How to Raise a Compassionate Child

Home » Family and Parenting » How to Raise a Compassionate Child
9 June 2023

In the world that we live in today, raising a compassionate child has become more important than ever. Compassion is what helps to foster empathy and kindness, and build an understanding towards others, which leads to a more harmonious and caring society. As parents, you play a crucial role in fostering compassion in your child. Below is a guide that provides some tips on how to raise a compassionate child, as advised by this prep school in London.

Lead by example

Children learn best when they observe and take in the behaviour of their parents. This is why it is so important to model compassion in your own life. Be sure to practice and display acts of kindness, empathy, and respect towards others, including family members, friends and strangers. Show your child how easily compassion can be displayed, through helpful acts in everyday situations. If you have time, try and take part in acts of service, or volunteer work that can be completed as a family, to emphasise the importance of giving back.

Teach kindness

Kindness is an important aspect of compassion. Reinstate how vital it is to treat others with kindness, respect, and acceptance. At school, encourage your child to include others, especially those who may feel left out or different. Remember to discuss how harmful the effects of bullying and discrimination are, emphasising the value of embracing difference, and creating an inclusive environment.

Words hurt

Remind your child that words can hurt just as much as actions, which is why it is so important to think twice before they speak. If your child does mess up, remind them to always acknowledge their fault and apologise.

Raising a compassionate child takes effort, and requires you as a parent to set the best example. By understanding the effect that compassion has and the reasons we so desperately need it, you can help your child set this value in place for life.
