Helping Your Child With Their Independence

Home » Family and Parenting » Helping Your Child With Their Independence
5 June 2023

As a parent, there are so many things you are responsible for teaching and doing for your child. From helping them shower regularly to teaching them how to tie their shoelaces, it is clear there are endless things to think about. However, one of the main goals is to raise an independent and self-reliant child, one who is capable of completing simple tasks alone. Teaching children to navigate their way around the world with confidence is a crucial aspect of their development. Here is some advice from this private school in Dublin on helping your child with their independence.

Encourage problem-solving and decision making

To foster independence in your child, encourage them to make decisions and problem-solve on their own. This doesn’t mean to completely leave your child to themselves when they are faced with obstacles but simply allow them to figure things out themselves before you jump in and aid them. Provide them with age-appropriate opportunities to make choices, where they can practice figuring out the pros and cons and experience the consequences of different decisions. Be sure to work alongside your child and guide them where needed.

Assign different tasks

Assign your child some age-appropriate responsibilities to help foster independence in them. Tasks such as making their bed, tidying their room, putting their clothes in the laundry basket, or even preparing simple snacks for themselves are great to help get them started. Start with little responsibilities and gradually increase them as your child grows up. This not only ensures they pick up valuable life skills but helps to build their confidence and competence.

Nurturing independence in your child is a lifelong journey that requires patience, guidance and a whole lot of trust. By encouraging them to problem solve and make their own decisions, whilst assigning them age-appropriate tasks to complete daily, you will help lay the foundation for their personal growth and prepare them for a future of full independence.
