The Importance of Pastoral Care in Schools

Home » Family and Parenting » The Importance of Pastoral Care in Schools
15 December 2021

Pastoral care is the system that all schools and places of education have in place to ensure the emotional wellbeing of the pupils. It’s impossible to throw hundreds of children into one building and not have some issues.

Pastoral care is in place to ensure that any child having trouble, is recognised as such and helped immediately to the best of the school’s ability. Without pastoral care, the bulk of the responsibility for every child’s emotional wellbeing would lie solely with their teacher and it’s a job for more than one person.

How does pastoral care work?

In the most practical sense, it’s simply ensuring children are happy and performing to the best of their ability at school. This includes not only their academic performance but also their socio-emotional development. Are they making friends? Are they happy to join in activities? Are they cheerful and do they have energy?

If a member of staff notes that a child isn’t happy or performing well, then they will first and foremost try to work out why that might be. This could be through conversations with the child and the parent separately. In this way, staff can get a deeper understanding of the child and what might be going on.

Sometimes, issues at home might affect a child in school and if this is the case, the pastoral care team will work with the parents or caregivers and try to better the situation for the child. They may come up with strategies to help the child overcome difficulties. This is the same if a child is struggling to make friends.

Children are complex, ever-changing and vulnerable so pastoral care is a vital component of any educational institute. This sixth form in Lincolnshire ensures that their pupils are happy and well cared for and this goes a long way to ensuring excellent academic results. To help children make the most of their education it’s important that they are as happy as possible.
