When building a new home, the main concerns are longevity as well as taking care of the environment to the best of your ability. This can be done through using solar panels to fitting fewer lights and even getting a ground investigation done. Not sure where to start? Here are a few ways that you can build an eco-friendly home.

- Doors and Windows. A common misconception is that doors and windows provide the same purpose no matter the quality but this is in fact wrong when it comes to being efficient. Lower quality doors and windows allow more air from outside to enter the home which can lead to a draft-like feel inside. This also means that heating systems have to work much harder to keep a constant temperature in the house, which in turn raises costs and wastes an unnecessary amount of energy. To avoid this, consider a higher quality product to be fitted with strong seals.
- Insulation also plays a large role. Poor insulation will keep little to no heat in the house, which will mean heating devices will be running for longer periods of time. Installing a high-quality insulation will help you steer clear of this.
- Lighting plays a huge role in the mood created in a home. Without contemplating, there’s always a huge urge to install as many lights as possible to create a brighter and happier environment. However, this can become costly and waste a lot of energy without realising it. Utilising natural light and breaking down internal walls can be a cheaper, long-term solution to creating a similar atmosphere without breaking the bank and saving as much energy as possible.
- Finally, water. Having a tap is amazing as water is there whenever you need it. But, it’s very easy to waste water given that there are no measurements whilst using faucets in the house. Water shortages are very common and should be taken into more consideration which is why installing electronic faucets can be a great investment as they only allow water to run for the time needed. Fixing leaks and replacing old taps with higher-quality ones can actually save up to 10% on your water bill annually.
