Kitchen renovations – the very phrase sends shivers down the spine! For many people, the thought of renovating their kitchen is an uncomfortable one. There’s the issue of the kitchen being unusable for some time – and of course, noise! However, if you prepare well, then it’s not as bad as you might imagine – plus if you’re getting a bespoke fitted kitchen then it’s all worth it in the end!

Empty the kitchen
This has to be done. There’s no way you can continue storing those dry goods and pots and pans when your cabinets are being knocked out for a bespoke kitchen. But if you pack well and label your storage boxes, there shouldn’t be too much difficulty once you come to unpack things.
Ditch anything that’s approaching its sell-by-date. Store your favourite gadgets and carefully wrap your crockery. Don’t try to use your best China when things are all upside down – washing up will be hard enough. Use paper plates instead. If you’re worried about the environment, consider using bamboo plates – it’s much simpler than washing up in the bath!
Warn the neighbours
It’s best to prepare your neighbours before workmen begin their task. This way, they can also undertake any special arrangements they might need to consider. They may work from home or have a baby – so it’s nice to let them know if there’s going to be some unusual activity in your home.
Eat out if possible
And if it’s not possible, then prepare some picnic-style food for those first days. You can use coolers to store things. Set aside a space in your dining room or wherever is convenient and here, keep your kettle, a few cups, tea and sugar. Nearby, store a cooler with any snacks or picnic foods inside. This will be your temporary kitchen. When your new kitchen has been fully installed, you forget all about the inconvenience you’ve had to live with!
